Welcome to this journey of healthy living. Along with me.
If you are in the “middle years” of your life, then we are in the same boat. We think our best years are behind us and we have only aches and pains to look forward to. Our parents had diabetes and hypertension, so we are doomed to the same fate. Right? Wrong
Let me tell you why.
As I approached midlife, I went through a crisis. Oh no, not the usual one. The other one. The one of excess weight. Accompanied by an expanding midriff. As if the upward ascent of the weighing scale was not mortifying enough, I was terrified of getting diabetes as both my parents had it.
I began searching far and wide, high and low ….hoping for some magic cure. Everywhere I was met with the same observation- it was in my genes and I could look forward to the rest of my life being in the clutches of diabetes. And once a diabetic, always a diabetic. I could only control it with medications, diet and exercise. It could never be reversed. This was conventional science and medicine pronouncing this life sentence over me.
Fortunately for me, I chose not to believe that.
I knew there was an answer there somewhere. I just had to uncover it.
During my research, I stumbled upon a day long seminar held by SHARAN (Sanctuary for Health And Reconnection to Animals and Nature). The founder, Dr Nandita Shah broke many myths and revealed a few starling truths that day.
Diseases that run in families are not hereditary, they are more a result of lifestyles that run in families. In short, we inherit lifestyles, not diseases.
So, my imminent diabetes could be avoided if I changed my lifestyle.
One of the major components of lifestyle is our diet- the food we eat, the way we cook it, the way we consume it. And I was shocked to know that humans are herbivores, not carnivores. Our bodies are designed to eat plants, not animals. If we eat what nature meant for us to eat, we could not only avoid a lot of diseases but also reverse them.
Yes, you heard me right! Diabetes could be reversed. Why was I not aware of this? Because it is a closely guarded secret. No marks for guessing by whom.
This truth was so startling to me. Not only did I change my diet choices and have greatly benefitted from doing so, but also made it my life’s mission to help spread the word.
I practiced this lifestyle and got trained by SHARAN so that I could share my knowledge with others in a systematic manner.
From here was born the need for this blog, where I will take you through the myriad ways a plant based diet can change your life around. It is not only good for your body, it is even better for the environment and the best for the hapless animals (needless to say).
Hop on and come along.
